Early Labour Conference

This conference is important for those with responsibilities for and interest in maternity service commissioning, planning and provision, service use and research related to providing optimal care to women and their companions during early labour. The conference aims to disseminate the findings of early labour research conducted in England, Scotland and Canada.

Workshop objectives: By the end of the workshop, participants will have had an opportunity to: Explain the underpinning rational for incorporation relational skills in antenatal and postnatal work; List 5 major adjustments couples need to make following the birth of a baby; Identify at least 4 relational skills couples can build on; Demonstrate at least six strategies for approaching the three C's (communication,conflict, & cherishing); State common pitfalls in dealing with conflict and suggest some coping strategies; List their top 4 emotional needs; Outline the notion of love languages

By the end of the workshop, participants will have had an opportunity to: Describe the strengths and limitations of antenatal education in empowering women to make their own choices and act on them; Reconise their own feelings about whether it is realistic to encourage women to make choices in labour; Devise and implement a series of activities for antenatal classes to help women think through their choices in labour; Facilitate couples to explore their choices together Facilitate practical skills work so that women can understand and put into practice self-help skill for labour, thus increasing their choices around pain-relief; Explore the importance of the language of education and of birth in influencing women's choices.
